The Importance of Being Charitable

The first definition of the word “charity” in the Merriam-Webster dictionary says “generosity and helpfulness especially toward the needy or suffering; also: aid given to those in need received charity from the neighbors.” There are many positive effects of being charitable. They include helping others in need, bringing more meaning to your life, realizing that every little bit helps, promoting generosity, experiencing more pleasure in life, and motivating friends and family.

Team Watience was founded by the mother of Hadi Abdur, a child who succumbed to aplastic anemia, a rare disease that damages the bone marrow and the hematopoietic stem cells within them. The organization is dedicated to increasing public awareness of aplastic anemia and other bone marrow failure diseases.

A bone marrow transplant (BMT) offers some aplastic anemia patients the possibility of a cure by replacing unhealthy blood-forming stem cells with healthy ones. One of the most crucial parts in the BMT process is finding a compatible donor. About 70 percent of all patients in need of bone marrow transplants must find a matching donor outside of their family. That’s why registering yourself with the National Bone Marrow Donor Program is a superior way to participate in charitable giving.

If you are between the ages of 45 and 60, registering yourself is easy and rewarding. Here are the details. The first step is to get swabbed. If you’re called as a potential match for a patient, you’ll be asked to have a blood test. If the test confirms your tissue type marches the patient, you’ll have a physical exam to ensure that you’re in good health and fit to donate. You’ll then donate peripheral blood stem cells or bone marrow. Your donation will then be transplanted into the patient, which means that you may have just saved a life!

At Team Watience, aplastic anemia patients, their caregivers, their families and interested collaborators share their experiences on healthy grieving, mental health and disease-support programs, especially within the South Asian and Muslim communities. You can also show financial and spiritual support by purchasing Hadi’s Crew T-shirts and long-sleeve shirts from this site, or coffee and espresso from Weird Brothers Coffee (weirdbrothers.com) and Hadi Cakes at Jenny Cakes Bakery (jennycakesbakery.net).
